Our Head Mentor explains how one question led to 18 years of pioneering research into people and relationships
Written by Vivienne Juan, Associate Elect
Motivation, inspiration, and principle-centredness. We don’t really learn any of this at home or at school. Everything is governed and directed by universal, eternal, and infinite law, in whatever dimension it might be — human, material, or financial. It’s governed by nature, natural laws; and these natural areas are steeped in principle.
“If you want to achieve something, first study and understand the underlying laws and principles that govern — on a primary level — the challenges and problems that you want to change and solve, or the opportunity you want to present and build.”
This is advice garnered from the acclaimed Dr Stephen R. Covey, dubbed the 'American Socrates', and author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, which has sold over 40 million copies worldwide.
Why don’t people follow through? This was the question that started it all. Check out the video below to hear more from Lighthouse International Head Mentor Paul Stephen Waugh about the curious questions and findings that led to the inception of FranklinWaugh, the first iteration of Lighthouse International, back in 2004.

Thanks Viv - before being mentored by Paul I had read quite a few personal development books. But it’s like reading a book when you can’t read! It doesn’t go in, in a way that the information can be used. That’s what mentoring has helped me with - to process and apply more what I am learning about fundamental principles and laws of effective living - and even then it’s tough!! A trustworthy mentor is so needed.
I started as a partner 10 years ago. I thought I was just going to develop myself and get mentorship and build a better life. I had no idea that I was missing a solid, principle and law-centred upbringing… how much I was missing, how much I needed and need to learn that I didn’t receive growing up. This goes WAY beyond ‘personal development’ as if it’s a nice-to have. This is not ‘extra ketchup with your fries’, this work is the ingredients to develop a solid, mature, adult human being, who isn’t dependent on a job or a mortgage or something ‘out there’ to feel like an adult, but because they are a wise, mature, principled adult. It’s hard…
Thanks for sharing Vivienne. Principles, habits, laws, effectiveness, value, potential, words that I thought the definition was all I needed not the understanding of!! I certainly don't recall learning about any of the above at school, I wish I had. Application and follow through once understood initially through mentorship is both foundational and liberating.
